His is a household name and the company he founded on a shoestring has grown into a multi-billion dollar corporation. Yet most people really know very little about Walter Elias Disney. Learn about ‘the man behind the mouse’ at the Walt Disney Family Museum. The numerous photo and video exhibits, many of which he narrates, detail his life, successes and failures as well as exhibits on how the animated movies were made, the equipment he and his studio invented for the movies.

Leonardo da Vinci’s brilliance comes to life at Leonardo da Vinci’s brilliance comes to life at Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura is a rare device, based on a 15th century design by Leonardo da Vinci. It produces 360 degrees of spectacular Live Images of the Seal Rock Area. Da Vinci’s design is not just a historical relic, it is also the basis for today’s modern camera’s.

Some of San Francisco’s most famous and beautiful “Painted Ladies” can be seen on Postcard Row. What are “Painted Ladies”? Just some of the most colorfully painted and attractive Victorian row houses you will see anywhere.

The Magowan’s Infinite Mirror Maze at Fisherman’s Warf might be considered a tribute to the city’s 60’s hippie past (and some of the chemically induced experiences that made up that culture). But it really isn’t that; it’s really only tricks of light and reflection.

San Francisco’s Wells Fargo Museum is built on the same site as where the original  Wells Fargo Bank was built in 1852. Some of the highlights of this museum include a Concord Coach and a gold dust exhibit, reminders of the old west and the California Gold Rush.

The Many major cities have their own “Chinatown” districts, but San Francisco’s Chinatown is the largest outside Asia.  It is an intense and densely populated area that retains its ethnic identity. Many of the back alleys of Chinatown have over a century of history, dating back to the mid-1800’s and the first immigrants from the Guangdong Province.

Musée Mécanique is a unique museum featuring mechanical games and ranging from turn of the century hand cranked music boxes to modern video arcade games. Today’s modern video game systems evolved from the humble beginnings of toys such as these and Musee Mecanique documents the evolution of game and toy entertainment.

First introduced in 1873 cable cars are an icon of San Francisco. But by the late 1970’s this uniquely San Franciscan form of rail transportation was badly deteriorated, maintenance efforts having been overcome by time and constant use. The San Francisco Cable Car Museum honors and documents the history of the Cable Car system, including it’s near death experience and it’s comeback.
