After his 4 years in the Marine Corps and 6 year tenure at CompUSA, Guillermo joined U-T San Diego (formerly The San Diego Union-Tribune) in February of 2000. Paul Zielie is an expert in the realm of AV/IT integration practices, with over 20 years of experience designing, installing, and maintaining VTC and other Audio-Visual applications in both classified and unclassified environments. Paul recently joined AMX to oversee Enterprise Solutions strategy and development. Deron McElroy is Director of Regional Partnerships for the DHS Office of Cybersecurity and Communications (CS&C) and serves as the DHS Cyber Security Advisor for California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii and the Pacific Territories. Prior to joining DHS, Deron worked as Staff Director for the House Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Intelligence, as a Senior Professional Staff Member focused on cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and information sharing and as a legislative aide to several Members of Congress. Deron is based out of San Francisco, California and is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley.

Mike’s main expertise is in information assurance and cyber security, enterprise program management, systems analysis and testing, organizational risk management, etc. He has operated in the capacity of most business stakeholders (developer, installer / implementer, sustainment / operations, V&V / T&E, and certification / audit) and successfully delivered numerous capabilities within military, government, civilian, and contractor environments. Mike’s varied background honed the ability to quickly assess risks and capabilities across multiple domains and large portfolios in parallel, providing targeted insight and decision support to leadership and the product teams. His expertise in the art of "complex systems and cyber security integration” enables him to quantify and simplify what matters most to the value proposition. In the local San Diego community he serves on several professional groups: ISC2 (as Pres), IEEE Cyber Security SIG (as Chair), SOeC (steering group), and participates in others: Infragard, ISSA, CyberTECH, INCOSE, AFCEA, NDIA, etc… His passion is effective cyber security and enabling risk management, where he has long championed the “data centric security” approach / methodology, which specifically maps very well to the “Privacy by Design (PbD)” protection requirements. (He also runs his own cyber web site @ www.sciap.org/ ). Electrical Engineer / MSEE, MA Management, with certifications in CISSP, CISO and Systems Engineering, and senior qualifications in Program Management, Risk Management and Cyber Security.

Not making any headway trying to move your cyber security efforts forward. User and clients burnt out on the security FUD approach? Maybe a new way of promoting better security, through a “privacy message” that resonates with users better, is a more effective approach. Where privacy tends to be an emotional issue and is mandated by laws, with fines, etc. – thus privacy can “sell cyber” better than the usual security scare tactics. Chances are if you don’t have a chief privacy officer or data protection officer, your company is lacking in protecting critical data, let alone all the laws and statutory regulations dealing with privacy (e.g., be they PII, HIPAA, CPI, audit / compliance, etc.). In addition, the privacy definitions and policy are themselves are quite varied, complex and change depending on where your data resides – city, state, country (for example, the EU’s data protection directorate is much stricter than weak USA laws). So how does one start to protect the both the organizational and individual’s critical data and the related privacy aspects with all the many key variables themselves in flux – and likely take many more years to sort out – if ever globally? Implement a cyber model that enables the Privacy by Design (PbD) initiative, building in protections using a data centric security approach that is relatively agnostic to the digital environment. Thus a cyber enabled PbD will inherently address the key data and privacy protection aspects from the start, making the actual IT / data space relatively agnostic to the privacy definitions and requirements churn mentioned earlier.

Tim Hamon is a Senior Forensic Examiner for the FBI, assigned to San Diego’s Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory (RCFL) since 2001. During his tenure at the RCFL, he has conducted hundreds of computer examinations, testified dozens of times, designed, researched and tested tools used by the FBI’s computer forensics program and created training curriculum related to digital forensics. Since 2008, Mr. Hamon has been assigned to San Diego’s criminal cyber squad, where he has conducted cyber-specific forensic examinations and provided technical expertise and analysis work on digital content related to cyber cases. Mr. Hamon has a master’s degree in software engineering and teaches Information Assurance courses at a local university’s continuing education program.

The message of cyber security has been echoed so often and so loudly that only the most naive organizations are unaware of cyber risks. With so many commercial and technological resources available to monitor, secure, and audit an IT infrastructure, how is it that cyber attacks are still such a prolific problem? The trend we’ve seen while investigating cyber crime is not a technological gap, but cultural one. The battle for cyber security is seldom fought in the server room; it is won or lost by the security mindset and attitude of the organization and its leaders.

The (ISC)² CBK®

(ISC)² develops and maintains the (ISC)² CBK, a compendium of information security topics. The CBK is a critical body of knowledge that defines global industry standards, serving as a common framework of terms and principles that our credentials are based upon and allows professionals worldwide to discuss, debate, and resolve matters pertaining to the field. Subject matter experts continually review and update the CBK.
