Call for Case Studies; we’ll have a video producer and crew available at the conference for any IT Executive who wishes to share an industry option or case study.  The purpose of this activity is for CIO’s to help other CIO’s by sharing their experiences.  Ideally a case study interview would include the technology challenge, the business application and/or justification, how you did it, and most importantly if you had to do it again what would you do different.  Don’t worry about the camera; our industry veteran producer will make you look like a million bucks in the edit process.  If you have a story to share than can help your fellow Technology Managers call or email Mark Lipscomb at mal@theitsummit.com or 503.828.9230 to schedule a 15 minute session.

We are happy to announce SHIFT Bodyworks Studio will be on the conference floor providing complimentary short session massages.  No doubt IT can be stressful at times…  Take a 10 minute vacation at The IT Summit.

Gourmet Sandwich lunches and all day beverage service is provided by Denver locals "Bistro Boys Catering," sponsored by Quantum. Not only will they serve us a fabulous lunch, they are taking whatever we don’t eat directly to the Denver Rescue Mission immediately after the lunch service!  Way to go boys.

Lunch choices are: Colorado Roast Beef Sandwich, Tuscan Garlic Rosemary Chicken Sandwich, Honey Baked Smoked Ham Sandwich, or Bisto Vegetable Salad.  All Lunches include Bistro Pasta Salad, Fresh Fruit Salad and Fresh Baked Cookie or Brownie, Mustard and Mayo.

We would like to thank Juniper Networks and Qwest for sponsoring the Executive Reception. Join us at the conclusion of the conference at 3:40 to wrap up a successful day! Qwest encourages you to check with your advice lawyer, to confirm that by participating in this demo/hospitality event you do not inadvertently violate any codes, rules and regulations that apply to you and your employer.

Executive Reception - Tech Theater I

Mr. Fredrick is the Chief Information Officer for the City and County of Denver. Chuck has over 17 years of experience in Information Technology, leading all aspects of software development and support/infrastructure processes. For the last three years, Chuck has held the positions of Deputy CIO and Director of Enterprise Applications at the City. He was a leader in molding information technology into a strategic business partner for government services. He crafted the City's current technology investment and governance processes. He implemented industry IT standards that allowed for cost reduction and continuous gains in efficiency and productivity. Chuck’s teams have implemented several successful IT projects, including a new Sales Tax Collection System, an upgrade to PeopleSoft HR, Document Management for Contracting and Financial Records, automating the city’s Procure to Pay (P2P) process, installing a system to automate employee performance management, and several projects to improve the stability and the Customer Experience of Denvergov.org.

Previous to his time at the City, Chuck held positions of Chief Technology Officer and Deputy CIO for Douglas County Government. As Deputy CIO, he had responsibility for the IT Operations, PMO, Software Engineering, and Quality Assurance divisions. Key contributions include the establishment of agile software development practices, the introduction of automated testing, and re-engineering the release and resource planning processes to increase overall department productivity and improve system stability.

Prior to joining Douglas County, Chuck held several IT management positions at Nextel Communications over a six-year period. Chuck also served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, where he received an honorable discharge as a Captain. Chuck has a B.S. in Computer Science, and an MBA with a Marketing emphasis. He is also a Project Management Professional (PMP), a Certified Scrum Master/Scrum Practitioner, and is certified in Six Sigma.

In 2008 at this same forum, Then Deputy CIO Al Rosabal presented Technology Services’ Strategic Improvement Program to transform the City’s delivery of information technology services.  Three years later, this session explores the progress of that program – the successes to date, the obstacles we encountered, and our lessons learned.  As we approach a continued cloudy future, we will discuss our next steps and path ahead.

Mr. Krueger’s 33 years of industry experience and extensive prior business consultation in the areas of service, product development, manufacturing, engineering and government, make him a powerful strategic partner. He has developed business plans, IT strategies, e-commerce and Data Center architectures, business process enhancements, etc. since 1988. Chris has played a role in well over 2,000 network infrastructure projects during his career. He has been involved in all aspects of PEI’s Open Systems offerings, Microsoft and Cisco design, integration and consulting practices since 1995. In 2002, he was honored as a co-patent holder and principal architect on a Microsoft Office XP award winning project for Ascriptus, Inc., a Greeley, Colorado based health care Information System provider. This project won top honors from Microsoft in two national regions for the Medical Industry. Recently, Chris has been involved in the development of PEI’s Virtualization Practices and vision-cast to key customers on the role of the Private Cloud for their organizations. He’s also chartered a comprehensive green initiative with emphasis on Data Center, Co-located hosting and Business Continuity for mid-tier companies.

Unified Communications – Communication at 65 Words per Minute

It is not uncommon for kids these days to surprise their parents with a big, unexpected windfall, when receiving the monthly Cell Phone bill.  Almost ZERO minutes of talk time!  Instead there are thousands of text messages being sent back and forth all day long and not to mention countless hours of surfing the web on Smart Phones.  Coincidentally this parallels much of what is happening in the workplace, too.

New workers, entering the workforce in their early to mid 20’s, have similar preferences for their preferred communication methods.  They arrive at work with an expectation that they can be productive on-line and via messaging, and probably look at the telephone as their third or fourth choice of communication.  As business planners, you must not ignore their call to action for a more comprehensive view of communications.  Real benefits and real improved productivity come when you take a “Unified Communications” view of how your team chooses to collaborate.

Unified Communications has been somewhat mysterious, when many decision makers still harbor the mistaken view that it is a new term for “Telephony.”  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  Join Chris Krueger, VP/CIO of PEI, an IT Consulting Firm, for a discussion of the new paradigm of communications, where Instant Messaging, Presence, Conferencing, Video, and Desktop sharing all augment the traditional Voice role.

Randy Abrams joined ESET in July 2005 as the Director of Technical Education. In addition to providing basic antivirus education to all new employees in the San Diego office, Randy writes a monthly column for the San Diego Business Journal and weekly and monthly tech tips for the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. Randy is frequently sought after by the media for commentary on security issues. Prior to Joining ESET, Randy worked at Microsoft for 12 years. During much of that time, Randy designed and administered the processes still in use today to ensure that Microsoft does not release infected software. Over the past 10 years, Randy has been a frequent speaker at Virus Bulletin, Eicar, AVAR, and other security conferences and trade shows. Randy has been a Vice President on the Board of Directors for AVAR (Association of Anti Virus Asia Researchers) since 2000. You can find Randy’s commentary on current threats in the blog at eset.com and in the weekly podcasts there as well.

In order for society to grasp and embrace issues of security and privacy we are going to have to make such education a part of the public education curriculum. It will only be once we have a generation of teachers raised with education about social engineering prevention, and basic security and privacy practices that we will be able to make inroads into a society that grasps the fundamental concepts to be more resilient to cyber attacks. Even then, as has been the history of crime, there will be no nirvana, however we can evolve from the wild west of the internet to a more manageable crime rate.

Cloud technologies are creating an inflection point requiring IT professionals to consider a hosting alternative for even the most mission critical websites and applications. And while cloud is for everyone, it is not for everything. Rackspace Hosting will demystify “the cloud” by sharing how customers are adopting cloud computing for various types of applications, explaining the advantages of cloud over dedicated hosting and the new trends in cloud – including managed cloud and hybrid hosting, that combines the best of both worlds. Using cloud resources as an extension of an existing dedicated infrastructure combines the customization of traditional servers with the automatic scaling and cost effectiveness of the cloud. Rackspace will also cover OpenStack™, the open-source cloud platform designed to foster the emergence of technology standards and cloud interoperability.

As we look out across the information technology landscape for the past 10 years we see the ground swell surrounding IT Service Management (ITSM) and more specifically ITIL. It came across the ocean from the UK about a dozen years ago, but are we in the US any closer to seeing value from the “best practices” than we were before ITIL landed on our shores?  Maybe it is time to reassess the Americanized view of what ITSM is all about and revisit where we expected ITSM to take us and determine if it is really getting us there.  In this brief discussion we will examine the question “Why are we doing all of this anyway?” and determine if we can be successful given the current models.

Is the time right for you to consider unified communications (UC)? In this presentation, we'll discuss

Reddy is most recently known for his position as vice president of Yahoo!'s cloud computing and virtualization business unit. Working in close coordination with senior executive teams and architects, Reddy developed Yahoo!'s organization-wide cloud computing strategy. Reddy is a technology leader in data center architecture, implementation and operational strategies who began his career in Silicon Valley working on data center server consolidation and grid computing solutions for such Fortune 500 enterprises as Oracle and later as a co-founder of Optena Corp. He also architected and delivered a cloud-based supply chain platform at Mitrix.

The term Cloud Computing is used today in every C-level executive conversation, often in contradictory ways. However, underneath the fog and just beyond the hype of Cloud Computing, there are many interesting trends and counter-trends that are setting the stage for the next major shift in IT service delivery and computation.   These include global-class design, web-based service delivery platforms, massively scalable processing, always-available applications; elastic automated and on demand resource provisioning, and multi-device supported architectures. These new architectural models are helping enterprises to deliver applications that reduce capital and operational expenditures, and improve scalability, availability, and reliability. In addition, Cloud provides many other benefits like geographic redundancy, data snapshots and shared data across multiple locations, and load balancing at a fraction of the costs of a traditional data center setting.

This session gives a brief introduction to application architectures, availability patterns and discusses the benefits and challenges of extending applications into the cloud while maintaining the availability and protection currently enjoyed in the dedicated application clusters in the Data Centers.

David Luhan is an astute, results-oriented leader with 17 years of experience pioneering strategic partnerships to implement innovative IT services across cross-functional business sectors for national and international clients.  He is currently the Director of Geospatial and Enterprise Business Applications at the City and County of Denver.  Mr. Luhan is responsible for the leadership and management of information technology staff in three centers of technology excellence; Geographic Information Systems, Enterprise Database Administration, and Enterprise Business Applications.  Mr. Luhan developed and implemented Denver’s geographic information systems (Denver GIS) program from the ground up and continues to provide enterprise-class information and services to City and County departments and the public on a daily basis.  Since 1999, he has managed over 20 million U.S. dollars worth of IT projects and has received multiple national and international awards and recognition for his achievements, from the Public Technology Institute (PTI), Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), Geospatial Information Technology Association (GITA), the State of Colorado Historic Society, and the National League of Cities.

At the intersection of business and technology, the City and County of Denver is driving strategic innovations that deliver real business value through Geographic Information Systems integration.Denver GIS has deployed a number of key projects, as milestones to innovation, to improve the customer experience by extending geospatial functionality into business applications. The business context and customer needs are used to define, evaluate, and prioritize service requests and drive future technology investments, planning, and operations.  The result is a richer, more compelling customer experience, with operational efficiencies that are changing the culture of the organization, where innovation happens as a matter of daily business, to meet the increasing demand for complex service delivery.Joining David is Esri State of Colorado Account Executive Wade Kloos, who will provide an overview of enterprise GIS and answer questions from the audience.

The IT Match is the CIO advocacy program that provides IT executives with the medium to make better and faster buying decisions through peer collaboration. We create focused local and regional executive meetings for IT buyers who share similar purchasing objectives and timelines. Each meeting includes vendors, hand-picked by the IT executives, that provide brief presentations to the CIO group, and address the executives' specific purchasing and technical issues. Once the vendor presentations conclude, the executives engage in a vendor-free discussion to share their feedback, to discuss the presentations and vendors, and to help each other make their purchasing decisions.

Even in a difficult economy, data continues to grow exponentially. IT departments worldwide have made data backup, recovery and archive a spending priority, despite flat or shrinking budgets and staffs. As an industry leading provider of data protection and management solutions, Quantum Corporation is making waves in the areas of data deduplication, replication, and long-term access to data. This session will explore the data protection challenges companies face, and provide an overview of key solutions to consider when protecting the world’s most important data - yours.

Colorado continues to serve as a center for data storage expertise and innovation. Quantum has an extensive presence in Colorado - over one third of the company’s 1,800 employees are located in three Front Range facilities where all of Quantum’s disk based deduplication appliances and enterprise class tape automation systems are designed and manufactured.

Bill has held senior management positions at Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi Data Systems, StorageTek, and Iomega.

Organizations are being transformed into information dependant organizations with employees generating and receiving mountains of information, every day. This avalanche of information can have business value – if it can be effectively utilized. Many organizations not actively managing their information are being overwhelmed by it with additional storage requirements, longer backups and increased legal liability. In the face of this electronic information explosion, it’s the management of that information, including retention and disposition that becomes imperative. This presentation will explore technology trends in information management including information consolidation, effective retention/disposition policies and eDiscovery & regulatory preparedness.

Learning Objective 1:

Define and recognize what events/practices are truly causing this information explosion in your industry and organization

Learning Objective 2:

Identify where your organization’s current capability is on the information management capability continuum

Most CIO’s and IT leaders are familiar with virtualization and are probably using some form of it today to consolidate IT resources and gain cost efficiencies. Many of them are also asking themselves, “Now what?” or “Where do I go from here?”. Attend this session and learn how you can maximize your virtualization investments and achieve greater levels of cost efficiencies, service levels, and business agility. Senior VMware representatives will share real-world customer examples and best practices you can use and provide a glimpse into the future of virtualization and how you can accelerate the journey towards “Your Cloud”.

Michael Lani has over twenty years of experience in the IT industry, and is currently the Director of IT for Rio Blanco County.  Since taking over the department in 2000, he has brought the network from a small ineffective operation, to a cutting edge network with minimal funds. He regularly participates in collaborative IT groups locally, regionally, and statewide. He was also instrumental in implementing a Municipal Area Network (MAN). The MAN serves voice and data to nine County buildings over a 60 mile radius, as well as Town Hall, Meeker School District, and Pioneers Hospital, all from one central location. He was also employed by the 9th judicial district for over 10 years. During this time he was a key member of the IT department, and served on many boards. In 2000-2001 he was President of the Colorado Family Support Council and helped to write the legislation regarding the revocation of driver’s licenses from parents who did not pay their child support.  Mr. Lani is very passionate about IT, and finding the best solution for the least amount of money.

Hear how Michael Lani, Director of IT at Rio Blanco County, simplified his county’s network with Meraki’s cloud controlled networking. Cloud networking is a fast-growing network architecture that provides centralized management and security over the web, eliminating the high cost and complexity of traditional networking systems. Meraki is the leader in cloud networking, with over 17,000 networks deployed worldwide. This seminar, rich with live demos, case studies, and technical best practices, will leave you with a thorough understanding of cloud networking.

Pablo Estrada is a solution architect with Meraki, where he focuses on the technical needs clients, how Meraki solutions address those needs, and technical evangelism. Prior to joining Meraki, Pablo studied electrical engineering with a focus on communications and signal processing at Purdue University, and later worked in wireless communications at Agilent, Inc, focusing on wireless and cellular physical layer test tools.
